FAQ

What exactly are fascias, soffits, and bargeboards?

Think of these as the “roofline.” The fascia is the long, straight board that runs along the lower edge of the roof, supporting the bottom row of tiles and the guttering. The soffit is the board tucked underneath the fascia, which you see when looking up from the ground. Bargeboards are essentially fascias used on the gable end of a house. Together, they seal the gap between your walls and your roof, keeping birds, rodents, and rain out of your rafters.

Should I choose uPVC or traditional timber?

While wood offers a classic look, it requires regular painting and is prone to rot if the paint peels. uPVC has become the gold standard because it is virtually maintenance-free—it doesn’t rot, flake, or need painting. A simple wipe-down with soapy water once a year is usually enough to keep it looking brand new. We offer a variety of finishes, including wood-grain effects, so you can get the durability of plastic with the aesthetic of timber.

Why is my guttering leaking at the joints?

Most gutter leaks occur at the “unions” (the joints between sections). Over time, the rubber seals in these joints can perish or become clogged with grit and moss, preventing a watertight seal. Often, this is a sign that the gutters were squeezed too tight during installation and have “buckled” due to thermal expansion. We replace these seals or install modern deep-flow guttering to ensure your system can handle even the heaviest North Sea downpours.

What is the "over-cladding" trap?

Some installers offer a cheaper “over-cladding” service, where they simply nail new uPVC boards over your old wooden fascias. We strongly advise against this. If the wood underneath is damp or rotting, covering it up just traps the moisture, which will eventually rot your rafter feet—a much more expensive repair. At DJ Walker Roofing, we prefer a “full replacement” approach: we strip away the old timber, inspect the rafters, and install fresh, thick uPVC boards for a permanent fix.

Do my soffits need to be ventilated?

Yes, absolutely. Your roof needs constant airflow to prevent condensation from building up in the loft, which can lead to mold and timber decay. We install ventilated soffits or “over-fascia vents” that allow air to circulate while remaining small enough to keep wasps and birds out. This “passive ventilation” is the most effective way to keep your roof structure dry and healthy year-round.

How often should I have my gutters cleaned?

We recommend a professional gutter clear-out at least once a year, ideally in late autumn after the leaves have fallen. If your house is near large trees, you might need it twice a year. Blocked gutters don’t just cause “waterfalls” over your front door; the standing water can become heavy enough to pull the fascia boards away from the wall, and the overflow can cause damp patches on your internal masonry.
